My best story so far:
College, Creative Writing 301.
I was reading a story I wrote out loud. They were all looking at me.
Someone sneezed.
I stopped. “Bless you.”
“Go on,” said the Prof. “Keep reading.”
The story was about a girl, a stranger I saw on the #12 bus. It was late.
She was crying when I got on, sobbing actually. I tried not to look. She pulled the line for the stop before mine. Her white sleeves were stained black. Eyeliner, I think.
“You okay?” I said.
She looked down at me, “Fuck you care?”
She got off and the bus started moving again. I pulled the line.
My roommate was up when I got home.
“Wattup.”
“Yo.”
He cracked a beer, “drink?”
I waved him off and went to my writing desk. I zoomed in on the bus that night. I wrote about the girl, the crying, the makeup, the words, the feelings, hers, mine, all of it.
Few days later I read it out loud.
Someone sneezed.
“Bless you.”
“Go on.”
I did and then it was over and everybody was looking at me.
The Prof crossed her arms, “That’s your best story so far.”
I shrugged.
“You don’t think so?”
I shrugged again, “it’s just a moment.”
“Yeah, but moments are relatable,” she said, “powerful.”
Yeh, funny — now I work in copywriting and moments are everything.
When in doubt, zoom in.
